Artist Statement

“We do not see what is “real”, we see what we are” – Willy Ronis

I started taking photographs in my late teens with my father’s 1941 Kodak 35RF rangefinder film camera, a strange-looking contraption.  I learned a little about composition and exposure, light leaks and all.  Luckily, I still have this camera.

That old camera made a big impact on me, and I have lots of respect for what street photographers of the past were able to accomplish with their manual film cameras.  Among my favorites are Willy Ronis, Dorothea Lange, Ernst Haas, and Vivian Maier.  Their images and skill inspire me to try my hand at taking street images not only with my digital camera, but also with older film cameras.

In these images of unguarded moments, I hope you'll enjoy yet another view into the specialness of the human spirit.
